Mary: The Prototype and Path of Biblical Discipleship - The Queenship

Mary, the Mother of Jesus, is presented in this text as the perfect model of a Christian disciple.

She is not only the mother of Jesus but also an example of how every Christian is called to live: by listening to God, trusting Him, surrendering to His will, and allowing Christ to live in us.

Mary shows us that holiness is not mainly about doing great things. It begins with who we are before God. At the Annunciation, Mary was humble, simple, and open to God. When the angel announced God’s plan, she asked questions, but finally she said, “I am the handmaid of the Lord; let it be done to me according to your word.” Her yes became an example of complete trust in God.

Mary also lived many of Jesus’ teachings even before Jesus publicly preached them. She was poor in spirit, pure in heart, humble, compassionate, faithful, and ready to serve. Like the good soil in the Parable of the Sower, she received God’s Word and allowed it to bear fruit in her life. She also remained faithful through suffering, especially at the foot of the Cross. In this way, Mary shows us what it means to share deeply in the life and suffering of Christ.

The Gospels record five important occasions when Mary speaks, and each message contains a lesson for disciples today.

First, “How can this be?” teaches us that we do not always understand God’s plan. We can bring our questions to God while continuing to trust Him.

Second, “Let it be done to me according to your word” teaches us courageous surrender. Faith means saying yes to God even when the future is uncertain.

Third, in the Magnificat, Mary praises God and announces that He lifts up the humble, feeds the hungry, and challenges human pride and injustice. She teaches us gratitude and concern for the poor.

Fourth, “Son, why have you treated us like this?” reveals Mary’s experience of pain and anxiety. She becomes a companion to all who suffer, especially mothers and children who experience loss, violence, or injustice.

Finally, at Cana, Mary says, “Do whatever he tells you.” These are her last recorded words in Scripture. They summarize her entire message: listen to Jesus and put His words into action.

Therefore, Mary teaches us that true discipleship means listening, trusting, surrendering, serving, suffering with Christ, and obeying His word. To become like Mary is to make room for Jesus to live and act in us. Her life invites every Christian to say, in daily life, “Yes, Lord, let your will be done in me.”
