Episode 14.

The Foundation and Formalization of the Society of Jesus

Ignatius of Loyola and his first companions began as a small group of friends who wanted to serve God with their whole lives.

They prayed together, helped people in need, and shared the dream of spreading the Good News. At first, they did not plan to start a new religious order. Their only desire was to follow Jesus wherever He called them.

As the group grew, the companions were sent to different places for mission. Being separated made them think deeply about their future. In 1539, they came together to pray, discuss, and listen carefully to God's guidance. After this time of prayerful discernment, they decided to remain united as one community. They also chose to live in obedience, especially to a superior, so that they could serve the Church more effectively.

The companions then asked the Pope to officially recognize their new way of life. This was not easy because some Church leaders were unsure about their new ideas. The companions believed, however, that God was leading them. They patiently answered questions and remained faithful to their mission.

Finally, in 1540, Pope Paul III officially approved the Society of Jesus. This was a joyful moment that marked the beginning of the Jesuit Order.

The Society of Jesus became known for its deep spiritual life, dedication to education, missionary work, and service to the poor. Jesuits were ready to travel anywhere in the world to preach the Gospel and help people. Their story teaches us that when people trust God, remain united, and courageously follow His call, they can make a lasting difference in the Church and in the world.
